I will never know who was responsible for removing the key that held the lid of Basil’s cage closed.  Maybe it was incorrectly replaced by me.  Maybe it was knocked loose by a child.  Maybe it was removed by Schwartz himself.  We never saw the cage opened. One day I found Basil on the floor of another room, injured and cold.
